Qualifications: Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and one year experience in operating heavy equipment such as sanitation truck, rear loader, side loader, front loader, or roll-off unit, etc. or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the principles of operation and servicing of heavy equipment. Adaptations and specialized uses to which equipment can be put in meeting emergency or unusual conditions. Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involving equipment operation. Occupational hazards. Safety precautions. And basic arithmetic.
Considerable skill in communications, which must be effective in both the oral and written process.
Ability to perform a variety of maintenance and repair assignments. Ability to understand verbal and/or written directions. Ability to speak and write in Spanish and English preferred.
Must pass a drug and alcohol screen prior to employment and participate in a random CDL drug/alcohol program. Must have a telephone in the employees residence or be available by an equally effective means of communication. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver�s License (CDL-B) and obtain a City of Santa Fe driving permit. Must possess or obtain certification in CPR and First Aid.
Duties: Operates a variety of motorized heavy equipment including backhoe, loader, side/rear/front loader, dump truck, etc.
Performs routine and emergency maintenance (including washing vehicle), repairs and adjustments, assists mechanics in performing major repairs.
Works on special events, cleanups, and snow removal as necessary.
Serves as a lead worker and makes decisions to ensure a safe working environment for crews collecting refuse and recycling.
Drives sanitation unit in an assigned area.
Prepares and maintains work logbook on daily basis.
Prepares and distributes work orders as needed.
And other duties as may be assigned.
Work is performed outdoors under inclement weather conditions at any time of the day or night. This position is routinely exposed to loud noise, vibration, fumes, odors, dust, infectious agents (germs, viruses, bacteria) and is subject to minor injuries such as scrapes, cuts, bruises, insect or animal bites. Demonstrated ability to lift and/or move 50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds and to perform strenuous work involving bending, twisting, reaching, lifting and rapid movement. Good visual acuity, the ability to see color, hear and speak is required. Overtime, weekend, holiday, night and shift work may be required.
