Job Summary: Under supervision, will perform a variety maintenance, construction, repair, and operational tasks in the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems using a variety of equipment, tools, machinery, instruments and apparatus. Performs routine and emergency maintenance to assigned equipment and components in the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems as needed or as directed. Assists and provides support to crews performing a variety of assignments.
Six months work experience in construction or other outdoor work preferred but not required.
License and Certifications
Must possess a valid Texas Class C driverís license.
Must be able to work after hours, weekends, and holidays, (scheduled and nonscheduled). Must be able to respond to after hour emergencies as needed within one hour of notification. Must be able to perform rotating call duty and rotating shift as needed. Must have telephone.
Position requires that City-provided safety boots and other safety equipment be worn on the job as prescribed by policy.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read, write, and understand oral and written instructions given in English. Ability to effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public. Ability to work with equipment and materials used in the operation, maintenance, construction, and repair of the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems. Ability to work with a variety of hand and power tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply common safety practices. Ability to efficiently complete work assignments independently and as a team with other employees, supervisors, divisions and the general public. Physically able to perform heavy, manual, and strenuous tasks under normal and adverse conditions including inclement weather conditions. Ability to safely operate light to medium trucks, pickups and other non-CDL vehicles and equipment, compactors, and miscellaneous machinery. Ability to perform routine and preventative maintenance on equipment. Ability to communicate effectively using a two-way radio.
Duties: Operates light to medium trucks and other non-CDL vehicles and equipment, trailers, compressors, pumps, jackhammers, compactors, hand and power tools, and other related equipment used in the operation, maintenance, construction and repair of Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems.
Assists in cleaning and inspecting sewer mains.
Cleans and performs routine and preventative maintenance on equipment, machinery, tools instruments, and apparatus.
Assists in cleaning, testing, calibrating, installing, removing, and repairing water meters of various sizes and types in the shop and in the field.
Performs a variety of manual labor and support tasks.
Installs, removes, replaces, maintains, and repairs system components in conjunction with regulatory requirements and departmental/division guidelines.
Completes reports on daily work assignments and activities as required.
Performs rotating call duty as assigned and rotating shift as needed. Responds to customer calls and emergencies during and after regular work hours as required.
May work independently in the performance of daily work assignments.
Operates tapping and other machinery to install water and wastewater taps, service lines, and related connections.
Performs a variety of pipe fitting and connection tasks on various water and wastewater mains, services and components.
Assists the excavation operators in excavating utility lines in close tolerance to other utilities, pipelines, and structures during regular and emergency situations as well as in normal and adverse weather conditions.
Works with other employees to effectively complete work assignments and duties.
Assists and provide support to crewleaders, equipment operators, and supervisors in training exercises for other employees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
