Job Summary: The Wallowa Whitman National Forest is conducting an outreach to identify candidates for a position within the Fire/Fuels Management Program on the LaGrande Ranger District. More than one position may be filled by this announcement.
Qualifications: Fire suppression experience is a requirement of this position. Minimum qualifications are Fire Fighter Type 1 and successful completion of S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior.
Duties: The Engine Squad Leader (AFEO) GS-0462-06 serves as an assistant to the supervisor of a 3-5 person wildland fire engine module in suppressing wildland fires. The selected individual helps direct the operation of the crew in consideration of safety of crew and equipment and trains and drills crew members in methods and techniques of firefighting. The individual also needs to possess knowledge of standard fire program requirements, suppression tactics, methods and procedures, and skill in the use of wildland firefighting hand tools, radios and chainsaws.
Other wildland fire related duties may involve fire prevention, patrol, detection, or prescribed burning. The incumbant may be assigned for varying periods of time into one or more types of positions within the wildfire program where the specialized skills are required.
The Grande Ronde Fire Zone operates two Type 6 engines, one Type 4 engines, 10-15 person IA hand crew. The District averages 30 fires a year as well as providing assistance to our cooperators and approximately 4000 acres of fuels treatment per year.
