What is Verification?

Federal regulations require colleges to use a verification process to ensure students are accurately preparing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA. Students may be selected for verification because one piece of information submitted is inconsistent with another or you may just be one of the lucky 30 percent of applicants randomly selected each year by the US Department of Education.

Most importantly, don't panic. The ENMU Financial Aid office will contact you by mail and ENMU email with instructions to guide you through the process.

There are new Federal Regulations which require tax information to be confirmed through the IRS. Copies of actual tax returns no longer meet the federal requirements.

You must provide requested tax information through one of the IRS confirmation methods:

  1. Link your tax information with the Data Retrieval Tool within the student's FAFSA by making a correction on the FAFSA website, www.fafsa.gov.

If 2011 tax filing status was Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, or you filed an amended, Puerto Rican, or foreign tax return it may not be possible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

  2. Request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS at www.irs.gov or by calling 1.800.908.9946

If you did not file taxes and do not have to file taxes but earned wages, please make copies of any W-2 forms.

Next, complete the verification worksheet and submit it to the Financial Aid Office. Include W-2 forms if you did not file taxes but earned wages. If you requested a Tax Return Transcript please wait until you receive it and submit everything together. You can either mail, fax, or drop off your paperwork to the Financial Aid Office. Electronic submission does not meet requirements at this time.

Tax information may be requested for the student, spouse (if applicable), and/or parent(s) - if the student is a considered a dependent on the FAFSA.

The verification process normally takes about 14 working days once data is received by the Financial Aid office so please make working with us a priority if you are selected.
