Upward BoundThe primary goal of the Eastern New Mexico University Upward Bound project is to assist students who are first generation college bound from a low income background enroll in and graduate from post-secondary programs of education. The project selects students who have the potential for success in college. ENMU Upward Bound program includes students from Clovis, Texico, Dora, Floyd, Elida, Melrose and Portales High Schools. The students meet twice a month throughout the school year and attend an intensive six-week on-campus academic program during June and July. Students receive assistance in college admissions, completing financial aid applications, ACT/SAT preparation, and support in personal and academic growth. About Upward BoundThe Program serves 60 active participants from Curry, Roosevelt and Lincoln counties during the Academic Year and Summer component. Summer ProgramDuring the summer, students live in campus residence halls and are immersed in a concentrated, challenging and supportive learning environment. They enroll in college preparatory classes in Mathematics, Literature, Study Skills/Careers, Science, a Foreign Language and other elective courses. Supervised silent study, study labs, field trips and recreational activities are integral parts of the Program. A team of adult college students (resident advisors and tutors) provides twenty-four hour supervision in the residence halls and is available for individual tutoring and advisement. Academic Year ProgramBetween September and May, students meet at the college on selected Saturdays. Transportation and breakfast (and sometimes lunch) are provided to participants for Saturday sessions. ENMU UB also provides tutoring, college tours, cultural tours, community speakers and individual academic advisement to our participants. High School CreditStudents who complete the summer component may have eligibility for an elective credit. Check with our guidance counselor for more information. New ExperiencesParticipate in intensive and interesting courses with students from other high schools. Engage in the study labs and tutorials. Define for yourself why college is the most important step you can make as a young adult. Live on CampusLive in a college residence hall for six weeks supervised by college students. Each student has one roommate. Male students/staff live on the one floor and female students/staff live on another floor. Three balanced meals per day plus snacks are provided. TutoringIndividual tutoring in Math, English and Elective Courses provided after class during the summer component. During the academic year, we will provide a tutor when needed by students. No CostParticipation in the Program is free of charge. Funding for the Upward Bound, a federal educational opportunity program, comes from the U.S. Department of Education. |
