Tutoring

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

• Identifies and helps individual students who need additional assistance

• Identifies historically difficult classes and provide group learning sessions with a trained leader

• Works with students one on one as well as in groups

• Works with students in a group

• Tutoring sessions are conducted by a peer tutor

• SI sessions are conducted by an SI Leader who is also present in class with the students

• Students schedule appointments to meet with a tutor

• SI Leaders set specific sessions times that anyone in the course can attend

• Tutors are trained and certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)

• SI Leaders are trained in study skills and understanding differences in learning styles

• Tutors are chosen based on academic performance and professor recommendation

• SI Leaders are appointed by the Professor based on academic performance

• Provides need based assistance to students

• Provides on-going assistance to the student throughout the semester

• Focuses on assisting student to understand course content

• Focuses on content, learning/study strategies, and internalization of course content

• Promotes independent learning and individual confidence

• Promotes student interaction and mutual support
