Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can have social, communication, and behavioral impacts. People with ASD 6 may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from other people. This may also include different ways of paying attention or reacting to things, repetitive behaviors, and disinterest in changing regular routines. The most important piece to remember is that ASD has a spectrum of impacts, and everyone is an individual.

A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder.

An ARTC Specialist coordinates accommodations and programs to meet the needs of students on the spectrum.

Brain injuries fall under two categories:

1. Traumatic brain injuries, associated with trauma to the head or skull
2. Acquired brain injuries, which occur on a cellular level and are not hereditary, congenital, or degenerative.

Even though traumatic and acquired brain injuries occur differently, both may impact the way a person thinks, feels, acts, and moves. Both types can also affect body functions and sensory perception. Each person with a brain injury is unique; physical disabilities, impaired learning, and personality changes are common. Accommodations will vary according to documentation.

Learning Disabilities (LDs) are neurological processing disorders that affect individuals' basic learning skills, such as reading, writing, and/or math. They can also affect skills such as time management, organization, memory, and attention. LDs vary from person to person and can vary greatly in severity. Examples of LDs include:

• Dyslexia: difficulty in reading
• Dyscalculia: difficulty in math
• Dysgraphia: difficulty in written expression

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that substantially limit one or more major life activities, such as concentrating, processing, or memory.

Symptoms are diverse and vary from person to person. They may include distractibility, impulsivity, hyperactivity, executive dysfunction, sensory sensitivities, difficulties with emotional regulation, and more. ADHD is broken down into three presentations: Combined, Predominantly Inattentive, and Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive.

There are numerous online entities that offer diagnoses in exchange for a fee. These predatory companies often operate completely on a self-report survey and the "patient" does not have direct contact with a licensed clinician/evaluator. We are seeing this most often with ADHD diagnoses. We cannot accept this kind of documen6tation and will support students to retrieve additional documents to complete their registration. A psychiatric disability is a diagnosed mental health condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning or performing essential job functions. Examples of psychiatric disabilities are depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, PTSD, OCD, and bipolar disorder (though there are many more!).

Professors are willing to provide accommodations during the time of injury, However, if the injury or condition is significant or recovery will be long-term, the Accessibility Resources and Testing Center is here to help.

Sports injuries happen frequently, and athletes and their trainers are encouraged to contact the ARTC to sign up for temporary accommodations.

Please understand that common non-disabling illnesses such as a cold, flu, strep throat or mononucleosis are not covered by ARTC and should be worked out with individual instructional faculty under attendance policies.
