Bio

Larry Nelson has over 40 years of diverse experience in EMS, Emergency Management and the Fire Service in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. He has deployed on seven Presidential Declared Disasters and numerous state-level disasters in Medical, Staff or Command roles.

In addition to the Bachelor's program he directs, he is an adjunct instructor for the New Mexico Dept. of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, teaching ICS, EOC Management, CERT and WMD courses. He also presents at Regional and State EMS and Emergency Management conferences. He is an active member of the New Mexico Emergency Management Association and International Association of Emergency Managers. He is a member of the ENMU Preparedness Committee, planning and facilitating exercises and emergency plans.

Bio

Dr. Worthington is an assistant professor in the Communicative Disorders program within the Department of Health and Human Services at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM. She is a licensed speech-language pathologist in New Mexico and Texas. Dr. Worthington is also a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and an LSVT LOUD Certified Clinician. Additionally, Dr. Worthington is a certified public accountant in the state of Texas. After working as an accountant for about 10 years, Dr. Worthington returned to school and earned a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dr. Worthington has experience training adult learners in academic and clinical areas related to the field of speech-language pathology. Moreover, Dr. Worthington has provided professional development to speech-language pathologists and audiologists by presenting at national and state conventions.

Research Interests

To determine the impact of task complexity and noise present in one?s learning and working environment on cognitive task performance, especially in the areas of reading, writing, working memory, and spoken communication.

To evaluate the effect of increasing one?s working memory capacity on individual cognitive task performance, especially in the areas of reading, writing, and spoken communication.

To investigate the impact of narrative retell, narrative generation, and vocabulary training on reading comprehension and spoken communication performance.
