Eastern New Mexico University has the second lowest bachelor's and master's-level tuition in the state of New Mexico, and has one of the most affordable graduate tuition rates in the United States. If you are an out-of-state student enrolling in 6 or fewer hours per semester, you'll pay tuition and fees at the low in-state rate. Eligible students may apply for the TEACH grant and Graduate Assistantships are also available through application to the ENMU Graduate School.

Learning Format for Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Degree Coursework

Our graduate degree in reading and literacy is designed to be completed 100% online. You'll complete readings, assignments, discussions on Canvas, individual projects and presentations, quizzes and tests throughout the semester.

Recorded lectures via Mediasite will connect you with professors and other students on your own time. In all classes participation done via Canvas and other resources like Collaborate, related to recorded lectures can be done at your convenience, rather than during a specific time.

To fulfill your graduation requirements for this program, you have the option of writing a thesis or passing comprehensive exams. You must be physically present to defend your thesis, but not to take your comprehensive exams.

We want you to feel connected and prepared to create and defend your thesis or complete your comprehensive exams.

Reading and Literacy Resources and Academic Support

We want to make sure you get the support you need. We offer flexible tutoring services, including the ENMU Writing Center which is available to help you improve your writing and help you clearly communicate for written, school-related projects and assignments.

We also have online databases, journal article, and eBooks accessible through the Golden Library. Since ENMU has a dedicated distance education librarian on staff, you'll always have the help you need to take advantage of library resources.

Admission Requirements for Education Graduate Program

If you fail to satisfy all of the following requirements for admission within your first 12 hours of graduate study at ENMU, you will be reclassified as a non-degree seeking student and you will not be allowed to register for further graduate coursework until all requirements for admission are fulfilled.

  1. Admission to the Graduate School.
  2. An undergraduate GPA of 3.00. If your grade point averages between 2.80 and 2.99, you will be considered for "conditional" admission; if accepted, you must earn a minimum GPA of 3.00 with no grade less than a "B" during your first semester or the first 9 hours.
  3. You must submit a letter of application to the Curriculum and Instruction graduate coordinator. The letter should specify your intended area of emphasis and how an advanced degree in education would advance your career.
  4. An electronic copy of your teaching license or confirmation of admission into the regular or alternate licensure program.

Admission to the education graduate programs does not guarantee successful completion of the graduate program.

Graduate School Application

Master of Education with Emphasis in Reading/Literacy Degree Requirements (36 hours)

You may select either a thesis or a non-thesis option.

Thesis option: 9 hours of Curriculum and Instruction Core Requirements, 27 hours of required emphasis coursework and 6 hours of Master's Thesis (topic to be approved by the graduate advisory committee); successfully pass an oral defense of the thesis.

Non-thesis option: 9 hours of Curriculum and Instruction Core Requirements, 21 hours of required emphasis coursework.
