What Can a Spanish Degree do for You?

The single most desirable quality by employers in nearly all professions is the ability to write and speak well. Also, those who speak a foreign language, such as Spanish, tend to earn 10–15% more than those who don’t.

Critical thinking skills, cross-cultural understanding, and the ability to empathize with others –all of which are hallmarks of an ENMU Spanish major’s education – can help you excel in any career path. Spanish majors don’t just teach. They’re in demand in government positions, the health professions, translation, business, and diplomacy, among others.

Even more exciting, you can complete this degree 100% online!

Spanish Program Details

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish will provide you with bilingual abilities, while encouraging a greater understanding of other cultures and languages. As our world grows more connected through economics and trade, Spanish is important not only to professionals working in the Southwest, but for any job where you may come into contact with a Spanish-language speaker.

We offer a special sequence of language courses that address your needs if you are a native or heritage speaker or if you've had previous contact with Spanish at home or elsewhere.

Although the time frame for degree completion varies with the individual student, the Spanish major is structured as a four-year degree program. You can complete the degree in three ways: entirely on-campus, online (through web-based or lecture-capture based courses) or through a combination of both.

Learning Format for Online Spanish Courses

This program requires you to be available during class times for live lectures via Mediasite. Professors are willing to make exceptions during extenuating circumstances, but expect you to block out time to gain benefits from interacting with faculty and peers in real time.

You will complete readings, discussion, projects and tests throughout the semester. Discussions are done in real time using Skype.

All Spanish courses are technology-enhanced and our basic language courses integrate special software and other media in a laboratory environment.

Advising for Spanish

When you join our program, we want to make sure you have all the resources and advice you need to successfully complete our program. To do this, we offer advising via phone or email. Our Advising Center advises students who have fewer than three college semesters completed and in your third semester, you will be advised by our Spanish Program faculty.

We also offer an intensive Summer Immersion Institute on campus, as well as a month-long total immersion program in Sololá, Guatemala, where you can practice Spanish in a native environment while exploring other regions and cultures.

We also have active international agreements that allow you to complete semesters abroad and internships at accredited institutions in Latin America and Spain.

Spanish tutoring is available every semester; contact our department for more information. If you live locally and are struggling with a foreign language, especially Spanish, the Language Lab, located in the Jack Williams Liberal Arts building, provides resources to supplement your language courses.

Service and Mutual Interest Organizations

Several offices and student organizations on campus have strong ties with our program. These include the Hispanic Affairs Office and Association to Help Our Race Advance (AHORA) which are actively involved with the local Hispanic community through service activities and outreach and the Spanish Club. The Spanish Club helps plan and facilitate Festival Románico. Festival Románico provides 500-600 high school students a chance to meet and compete in various events, in Spanish.
