The bachelor's degree with a major in mathematics for secondary education is designed to provide future teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach standards-based secondary mathematics. The program undergoes continuous review so you know you are learning the latest teaching techniques and standards associated with teaching this subject in the high school classroom.

If you are interested in teaching mathematics at the high school level, you should pursue a major in mathematics for secondary education at ENMU. You can usually completed this degree in four years, but the time frame for degree completion can be different for each student.

Our faculty are committed to preparing you to teach high school mathematics. While you are a student, you'll have the opportunity to work as a grader, a tutor or a supplemental instructor.

Service and Mutual Interest Organizations

The Department of Mathematical Sciences faculty sponsor both a student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation student group. As an ENMU student, when you join these organizations, you'll have the opportunity to hold leadership positions and participate in community service which you can to your resume when you graduate.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance

We are committed to helping you finance your education. In addition to available grants, loans and work-study positions, there are 12 scholarships/awards available for continuing students, eight of which are scholarships specifically for mathematics majors. Additionally, many Eastern students work part-time jobs on campus to help finance their education.

Career Opportunities

Once you complete your degree, you'll find the job prospects for mathematics for secondary education majors is excellent. There is a shortage and continuing high demand for high school mathematics teachers in New Mexico and nationwide.

  • If you are interested in becoming a high school math teacher, you should take the following courses while you are in high school: Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II
  • Trigonometry and/or pre-calculus.
