If you are interested in teaching history or social studies at the high school level, this degree is for you. The study of history helps the you better understand the context of the events you see in the news and fosters an enjoyment of our interconnected, globalized world history. Coursework involves training in the use of historical sources as a means for developing skills in critical analysis, a spirit of inquiry and open-mindedness. In this degree, you will choose coursework from U.S., European and non-west areas for study. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to take specialized courses about history as depicted in film and fiction, diplomatic history and military studies. If you're interested in teaching at the elementary school level, you can complete an emphasis in social studies through the education program.

We are committed to responsible academic advising. Our faculty members are specialists in their areas of advising and are current with requirements for admission to the programs they advise. Our students often compete successfully for internship opportunities in governmental and non-governmental agencies, and have studied abroad for one or more semesters and actively seek mentorship in their future fields. Our history alumni have achieved considerable success in graduate study, the law, business, government service, education, and in a wide variety of fields in business, including information technology and others.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance

We are committed to helping you finance your education. In addition to grants, loans, and scholarships offered University-wide, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers 37 scholarships for current students, several of which are available for ENMU students who have declared history as their major. Additionally, many Eastern New Mexico University students work part-time jobs to help finance their education.
