The ENMU Department of Public Safety (ENMU DPS) is a comprehensive law enforcement and public safety department that provides law enforcement and investigative support services to ENMU. The department functions like most law enforcement agencies across the state of New Mexico who have a population of approximately 15,000 residents.

ENMU DPS is open every day, 24 hours per day, regardless of University holidays, breaks or closures. We employ nine certified, commissioned and sworn law enforcement officers.

Our certified officers have concurrent jurisdictional authority in Roosevelt County, the city of Portales and all lands owned, operated or controlled by ENMU and its branch campuses. This authority is granted by state statute, mutual aid agreements and/or cross-commissioning.

We strive to facilitate and maintain positive and productive working relationships with all surrounding local, state and federal agencies.

Our Police Officers

All ENMU DPS police officers are certified law enforcement officers for the state of New Mexico or must be certified within one year of their employment. All of our officers are required to successfully complete the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy which is facilitated by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

Additionally, they are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of advanced law enforcement training every two years in order for them to maintain their police officer certifications through the state.

Our Student Security Officers

If you are a criminal justice major, you have the opportunity to get valuable hands-on experience to help you get a head start on your future law enforcement career.

Student security officers are trained in the observation/reporting of suspicious activity, administrative regulation enforcement, special event operations and traffic control. Those employed in this capacity are also responsible for enforcing ENMU parking regulations.
