Langston University in Oklahoma, a traditionally all-black school where he graduated with honors, Oscar was a member of the university track and field team which won the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference championship four times.
After his 1963 graduation, he joined the Peace Corps and was sent to West Pakistan as an agricultural advisor. He also placed second in the 400 meters in the 1964 national games in Lahore, Pakistan. “The Peace Corps was a wonderful experience,” says the avid Dallas Cowboys and Oklahoma sports fan. “It was awesome working with another culture. It helped mold my life, and, in my mind, I still have a relationship with those people.” While he was overseas, the United States underwent a cultural revolution. “When I left for Pakistan, I was a ‘Negro.’ When I returned, I was a 'black.’ It was a shock to return to the civil unrest in the United States.” In "Jim Crow America...water seeks its own level." Oscar says he grew up in “Jim Crow America,” but was able to avoid most overt racist experiences. “The attitudes were there, I just didn’t look for them.” He says his grandmother instilled in him that “water seeks its own level.” He does remember the Langston University track team having to enter the back door of restaurants. He also remembers at an away meet, just before he was to run the mile, someone released a bag of black cats. “I guess this was because I was the only black running the mile in the conference and at the collegiate level in the state,” he speculates. “Who knows what motivates people? It certainly motivated me to continue to win every time I ran, and the incident was a valuable life lesson.
"As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. suggested, ‘The great challenge is to prepare ourselves to enter these doors of opportunity.’ Thanks to my background and preparation, I believe I have done this,” he says. As examples, Oscar notes that he was the first black elected to the Portales City Council (for two terms), selected as chair of the Eastern Plains Council of Governments (for two terms), member of the Community Services Center Board, former board member of the Las Casa Family Care Service, appointed by State Senator Stuart Ingle to two statewide advisory bodies and, more recently, as a member of the New Mexico State Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, and he represents Mayor Orlando Ortega on three city-wide committees, two of which he serves as chair.
factor. “I’ve never been impressed by numbers. I don’t see Portales’s general population as being prejudiced. Thank God, the few that may be do not represent the majority. If someone is biased toward me, I know how to deal with it.” He notes that he was defeated in his first race for City Council in 1990 by three votes “because I was beaten by a better candidate and good friend – Richard Bradfute. The next time I defeated another candidate by over 100 votes. People voted on ‘Oscar the person.’”
business arena by joining Comb's Properties as a salesperson and Corporate Solutions, a personnel consulting company. His 22 years at Eastern will simply be the finishing line for his career in higher education. Other jobs along the way included stints with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Farmers’ Home Administration in North Dakota, cement laborer in Oklahoma and California, a tube pipe machine operator for Alcoa in Vernon, Calif., recreational worker and commissioner, youth sport coach, referee, peanut plant laborer for Sunland Peanuts in Portales, and botany research technician, then personnel associate, for California State University-Long Beach.
fine people and, together, I believe that we advanced many professional personnel concepts. One such example is in staffing. Today, the norm with personnel selections is based on qualifications rather than on any of the ‘isms.’ When I began my work in higher education back in 1966, I could not comfortably make this statement. Now I can because during my tenure we have had great leadership and each administration promoted the concepts of equal opportunity in hiring. I am proud to say that I was given the chance to be a key part of this promotion and growth on a national basis.”
Oscar says he will always remain a member of the Eastern New Mexico University family. “I thank Eastern for the opportunity; I could not have asked for a better place to work."
"Miles to go before I sleep – miles to go before I sleep." – Robert Frost In quoting Robert Frost, his favorite poet, Oscar says he regrets leaving
Eastern, but, “I have miles to go before I sleep – miles to
go before I sleep.”

Professors “He makes everyday a Valentine’s Day.” – Ann Varela
invited me along,” Manny explained. Until then, they didn’t
know Sally was a mutual friend. “Our two biggest keys are a belief in God and having a sense of humor,” said Manny. Ann added that they also believe in open communication. “I also do everything she tells me,” said Manny with a chuckle. The couple notes they have similar teaching styles, with some variations. “We both take the hands-on approach,” Manny noted. He said that his work in the science labs and the new math labs that Ann uses allow them to bring real world experiences to the students. “I like to have students working with different organisms that
they will be facing in the real world – like what you would find
on a shower wall or possibly on a door handle,” said Manny. "I use food analogies when I teach simply because it is common ground for the students and me. We all know what a double-stuffed Oreo is so when I teach the class about binomial squares, I mention the Oreos because the middle of the product is doubled, just like the filling in the Oreo. Double cheeseburgers work as well. "Burritos are tortillas with filling. Parentheses are used in math like the tortilla. We fill them and even raise them to powers. It helps the students to visualize what is being raised to the power. I also do Robin Hood math – take a quantity from one equation and substitute it into another equation – when we use substitution to solve a linear system, but that’s a whole other story."
Their teaching styles do differ according to their respective level of classes. “Ann teaches mainly freshmen and sophomores, while I am teaching mainly upperclassmen,” Manny said. “The students I teach want to be there because it is their chosen major. Ann teaches freshman- and sophomore-level courses that students are required to take. That makes it more of a challenge to keep their attention.” The Albuquerque and Boston transplants say they like working at Eastern. “It's great!” said Manny. He admits that he does like to spend a lot of time in his lab working on his research. “Ann likes to refer to herself as a ‘lab widow,’” he said chuckling. The duo do find things besides kids and work that keep them busy. “We go to Eastern games and occasionally a musical or two,” said Manny. He noted that he was not like many American guys in their approach to remembering Valentine’s Day at the last minute. “I had a balloon and small teddy bear delivered, which I arranged a week before,” he said. He admitted that he is guilty of doing something most men do only early in a relationship. “I gave her too many teddy bears and after a bit she told me to stop,” he said chuckling. Ann said that she is not one to look for gifts. “He makes everyday a Valentine’s Day,” she said. Professor Opens 'Casa del Sol'
Bed and Breakfast "Casa del Sol not only has a relationship with ENMU, but possesses a rich history dating back to the 1940s." – Penny Sanders
“My dad worked at Eastern and he loved sharing the home with people in the community. Turning the house into a bed and breakfast, and giving it over to the community, seemed like the natural progression. Before my mom died, she unofficially used it as a bed and breakfast for awhile,” Penny said.
“The house was built as a labor of love by a former chemistry teacher here and his wife. They made the 1,600 adobe bricks and traveled to Cloudcroft and chopped down the trees for the hand-carved vigas (rough-hewn beams) themselves. It is a unique home with a very unique history,” Penny said. When Dallan and Mickey bought the house, they continued the tradition of hospitality by adding a guest house in 1978. “We bought it when I was 15 years old; we were living in a cool 70s house when my dad came home and said he bought the little two-bedroom house. It horrified me at the time because we were going to move into a little adobe hut, but I have grown to love that house and the history behind it,” reminisced Penny.
Penny and Carol hope that the house will be a nice option for visiting faculty or any out-of-town guests. Those who stay there can look forward to a home-cooked breakfast made by Carol. “There will be a variety of options for guests. Depending on their time constraints, they can have several choices from things such as scones and fruit or a breakfast casserole,” Carol said.
“I think once people know that it is an exceptionally unique and
comfortable option, it will become one of the favorite places to stay.
It is not a chain and you get a wonderful homemade breakfast,” Penny
said. View brochure for "Casa del Sol" [here].

About 90 percent of theater majors at ENMU came to the Drama Festival when they were in high school, including Ms. Reeves. “The purpose of the Festival is to find new students; it is a huge recruitment project for us. It is also good because we educate high school students and give them a taste of professional theater,” Ms. Reeves said.

[click here for fitness calendar] Enrollment Information from ENMU President – The final enrollment for the 2007 spring semester is 3,589 compared to 3,722 in spring 2006. This is a decrease of 3.6 percent. The semester credit hour decrease is 3.8 percent. The major areas of decline are in undergraduate transfers and degree-seeking graduate students. The true bright spot of spring enrollment is in the area of freshman retention. The retention rate from fall 2006 to spring 2007 is 84.2 percent, compared to 79.4 percent for the fall 2005 to spring 2006 period. I thank all faculty and staff who worked hard to retain a higher percentage of our first-time freshmen. We need to continue this strong effort to increase the fall-to-fall retention rate to an acceptable level. Please remember that we were up slightly with the fall enrollment (2 percent) and down slightly in SCH (2.4 percent). We are not near the 5 percent decrease in SCH which triggers a reduction in funding, but we also are nowhere near the 3 percent increase in SCH that gives us additional funding from the state. Although enrollments are down throughout the state, we are used to being the exception to this trend. We all need to remember that each of us plays an important role in the recruitment and persistence of our students. I thank you in advance for working hard to help our students succeed at Eastern. – President Gamble Some Revisions Made in Commencement Schedule – A few revisions have been made in the spring commencement schedule. Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month It's important that individuals recognize the hazards of slippery surfaces.
Here are helpful hints from winter-safety experts that will reduce the
risk of falling when slippery conditions exist: Walk consciously. Be alert to the possibility that you could quickly slip on an unseen patch of ice. Avoid the temptation to run to catch a bus or beat traffic when crossing a street. Walk cautiously. Your arms help keep you balanced, so keep hands out of pockets and avoid carrying heavy loads that may cause you to become off balance. Walk "small." Avoid an erect, marching posture. Look to see ahead of where you step. When you step on icy areas, take short, shuffling steps, curl your toes under and walk as flatfooted as possible. ENMU Physical Plant employees work very hard to keep the sidewalks free
from ice and snow. But, even though there is ice melt on the sidewalk
(usually blue crystals), the cold wind can refreeze the water turning,
it back to ice. TechTips –
