Eastern New Mexico University’s College of Education is providing reading tutoring for 14 area children this summer.  Ranging from kindergarten to high school, the students come from Floyd, Elida, Muleshoe, Texico, Portales and Clovis.

The seven undergraduate and graduate ENMU students providing the one-hour tutoring sessions are enrolled in Dr. Kathleen Donalson’s “Reading 493/516: Instruction and Assessment for Special Populations.”  Materials were purchased with funding from New Faculty, College of Education and Technology, and Roosevelt County Literacy grants.

Dr. Donalson said, “The clinic is especially valuable because the children receive individualized instruction. The clinic works on reading, writing and ‘word work.’”

Dr. Donalson and her husband, Dan Greathouse of the Portales schools, tested children in the spring who had been identified by parents or their teachers, then prioritized them by need.  Although ENMU could accept only 14 children for the summer tutoring—two for each ENMU student—those not selected still benefited with up to $500 worth of free testing and reading strategies provided to their teachers and parents.

Although the children are not being identified, one grade-schooler with dyslexia, in her second summer of tutoring, said, “I hated reading aloud.  Other students wouldn’t give me a chance, so I just gave up.  But here I don’t feel pressured or dumb.  My teachers said this has really improved my reading.   Now, I’m not afraid to read aloud.”

Dr. Donalson said the tutoring has improved the self-esteem of all the students, including one with both parents in prison.
“It has been a win-win situation for everyone,” said Dr. Donalson.  “College students and children in the community have all benefited tremendously.”
