I wake this fine Sunday morning with a sense of happiness I've not felt in a long while. My beloved ENMU Greyhound Football team accomplished something that seemed impossible. The team went on a run of victories over extremely stiff competition and can proudly call themselves Champions of the Lone Star Conference.
Yes, its technically "Co-Champions" with Tarleton State but that is a far site better than we have been in many, many agonizing years. I doubt we will be selected for the post season as that is generally the case with ENMU, the bigger wealthier schools get the nod, even when we win outright but that is fine. This season likely scared the living crap out of the competition in the LSC as we are generally predicted to be last or close to it year in and year out. We knocked off two top 15 teams, we played and beat a Division 1 JV team at their home and we won a nice game in Jerry World for a second straight year.
Thanks to coach Josh Lynn and his staff, you all are miracle workers and have hopefully started a legacy of pride and success that will be remembered for decades to come. This may seem overly melodramatic, as its just Division II football in a tiny town in the middle of no where. I disagree. Division II football to me is more pure and better than Division I...you may think I'm crazy but here is my thoughts. There are a very very small percentage of kids from DII teams that go to the NFL nationwide. These kids go to college for EDUCATION.
There is not a lot of glamour in DII and the ultimate goal is as much academic as it is athletic. Our coaches make as much in a year as Saben and the DI powerhouse coaches make in a week, the coaches are there for the love of the game and the process of building young men into solid, intelligent and productive citizens. Yes, there are problems similar to the DI schools. Kids do stupid things and make bad choices with off the field situations. Kids are suspended, dismissed and punished for bad conduct. The difference is simple and very interesting...our kids do not have 40 microphones, hoards of reporters and leaches hovering around those bad choices and making them national nightly news that run on repeat loops every 15 to 30 minutes.
In conclusion, I'm a Happy Alum of Eastern New Mexico University. I hope this is just the start of a long and successful tenure for Coach Lynn and the Greyhounds. Congratulations to the team and their families, as they are as big a part of DII as the normal fan base. Thanks for bringing home the title of Champion to our school.
