Job Summary: Operates and maintains the wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift under the strict supervision and direction of a licensed operator to ensure the effective processing of wastewater, keeping the plant within state and federal permit specifications to avoid any penalties. Keeps shift leader and/or supervisor informed of plant and equipment conditions.
Qualifications: Possess valid Texas Driver License. Possess class �D� wastewater license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality or ability to acquire within time frame prescribed by department license policy.
High school diploma or GED certificate with completion of one or more courses in biology or chemistry at the high school level or college level.
Experience in a wastewater plant preferred. Other plant and related experience will be considered.
Must be available to work on rotating shift, be available for 24 hour call, and work overtime as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read, write and calculate. Understand and follow oral and written instructions and maintain records. Ability to perform tasks requiring heavy physical effort in a safe manner. Possess working knowledge of pumps. Some knowledge of pump and plant operations, valves and flows. Skill in the use of pertinent tools. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Works under conditions with objectionable odors (H2S 2 ppm). Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant processes, sludge conditioning and de-watering objectives. Ability to pass an in-house written exam and skills test. Be able to use self-contained breathing apparatus and other pertinent safety equipment. Ability to adhere to all plant safety and security policies.
Duties: Conducts lab tests such as pH, dissolved oxygen, centrifuge, titration and others on applicable samples as required.
Reads and records meter readings, changes recording charts, adjusts time clocks and metering devices, keeps logs and log sheets as required.
Checks plant equipment during shift. Assists in getting plant on line in event of power failures at electrical equipment or any debris blocking flows in lines.
Gathers samples, as required from specified sampling points in proper amounts at proper times.
Prepares chemical solutions as required, calculates and regulates dosage.
Regulates water, wastewater, and sludge flows throughout the plant.
Changes chlorine, sulphur dioxide cylinders and regulates gas feed rates.
Operates sludge dewatering equipment and all related procedures as required.
Adjusts sludge pump feed rates and belt press as needed to obtain most economical use of chemicals.
Maneuvers large trucks in and out of sludge de-watering building for belt press operations and rakes down accumulated sludge.
Operates various pumps, motors and other wastewater treatment plant machinery and equipment, de-ragging sludge pumps when necessary.
Keeps up the appearance of all equipment and buildings to include the cleaning of machines and floors.
Operates front-end loader and vacuum trucks.
Maintains plant grounds.
Adhere to all safety and security policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
