Urgent Scam email notification

Email, April 11, 2020

Campus community,

We have seen an uptick in student accounts being compromised and used to send out scam email messages to ENMU staff, faculty and students. We are still investigating these incidents, however from the first one we determined that the only probable method of compromise was password reuse on some other site. We have not been able to determine exactly what website was compromised, as the user reused their password on several websites.

Students: If you use your ENMU email address on any other website as a username, we highly recommend you DO NOT use your enmu.edu password on those sites. Further, we also recommend changing your ENMU password to something other than the default password you were provided. If you have ever used your default password on another website (including Bookstore or other vendors associated with University related activities), you should change your ENMU password immediately. This can be accomplished through the portal. Instructions can be found at https://my.enmu.edu/web/its-technical-trainer/new-student-guide, or contact the helpdesk at 575-562-4357.

Also please note that there are not and will not be unsolicited job offers relating to COVID-19 through University email. As I have said before, if it sounds too good to be true, that is because it is.

We will continue to investigate these incidents and hope to figure out precisely how these users were compromised.

If you have an email that you believe is a scam or phishing attempt, please contact the helpdesk at [email protected] and also email [email protected]. You can also call the helpdesk Monday through Friday from 8am to 8pm at 575-562-4357.
