Roosevelt County
Historical Museum

Founded in 1940, the Roosevelt County Historical Museum (RCHM) began as a place for the archaeologists, historians, artists, geologists, etc. of the Roosevelt County Society of Art, History, and Archaeology to display their research. When the Society disbanded a few short years later, the aim of the museum switched to become what it is today, a hotbed of history for Roosevelt County. The RCHM is located on and operated by Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU), but serves all citizens of Roosevelt County. Focusing on education, history and artifact preservation, and community outreach, we at the RCHM promise to have something for everyone.

Mission

To foster and promote a better understanding of the diverse cultural heritage of the people of Roosevelt County through the preservation and interpretation of artifacts connected to the County’s history.

How can you help?

Donate

The RCHM is driven through community item donations and monetary donations. Monetary donations can be accepted at our in-person donation box, or from our online donation form. Items in the museum are strictly from Roosevelt County and the American Southwest. We are always accepting donations, but we do reserve the right to refuse items. Before you come to the museum, check to see if your item aligns with our criteria for donations:

  • Is the item from Roosevelt County? Items from Roosevelt County are always preferred to items from outside our jurisdiction. However, if the item is owned or has been owned by members of the county, that does qualify it be donated!
  • Do you have records, receipts, or other proof of the item’s validity? Items with sound provenance make our museum more authentic and truer to the county, making guests experience more enjoyable.
  • What shape is your item in? We love to see your enthusiasm about history and how you can contribute to it, but we will not accept broken or heavily damaged items without substantial reasons.
  • Have you seen your item in the museum? If you are donating an item that we already own, we are likely to turn it away to keep our archival space organized. If we only have one version of the item, we may take it to add to our Education collection or as a spare.

Once your item has been accepted for donations, it will be catalogued and stored in our archival space for future research, exhibition, or educational use. We assure you it will be handled with the utmost care so future visitors can appreciate the item and its history.
