Bachelor of Arts in English

If you're a fan of Jack Keruoac, Junot Diaz or Charles Dickens, dream about NYC's Shakespeare in the Park, can't stop talking about the cultural implications of your favorite TV show or already started on the next great post-apocalyptic novel, being an English major at ENMU will let you study what you love. ENMU offers courses in American, British and World literature, including popular culture and film, creative writing and technical writing. On average, an English major's time frame for degree completion is four years, but this does vary from student to student.

Our faculty is committed to responsible academic advising. We are specialists in our areas of advising and are current with requirements for admission into the programs we advise. As an ENMU student, you'll have the opportunity to hold staff and editorial positions with publications like El Portal and The Chase. We also offer an English Honor's Club that allows you to find and create community within our program. Our department also hosts an annual summer writers' retreat, bringing two well-known writers to campus for an intensive two-week workshop.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance

ENMU is committed to helping you finance your education. In addition to grants, loans, and scholarships offered University-wide, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers scholarships for current students, four of which are scholarships exclusively for English majors. Additionally, many Eastern New Mexico University students work part-time jobs to help finance their education.

Career Opportunities

Many people assume English majors can only look forward to careers as teachers, professors, copywriters, critics, proofreaders, technical writers and editors. However, studies show that English majors are also consistently hired for a variety of jobs that require persuasive and clear communication skills including, but not limited to:
