The study of history will help you better understand events in the news and will foster your understanding and enjoyment of our interconnected, globalized world. Coursework in our bachelor’s in history involves training in the use of historical sources as a way to develop skills in critical analysis, and a spirit of inquiry and open-mindedness. More than knowing our past, a historical approach to problem-solving modern-day events is appreciated in: teaching, law, journalism, politics, ministry, civil or diplomatic services or business.
In this program, you will choose coursework from U.S., European and non-western areas for study. We also offer specialized courses on topics like: history in film and fiction, diplomatic history and military studies.
You may major or minor in history. A major is also offered in social studies with an emphasis in history to teach at the secondary level. If you’re interested in elementary or special education study, you can complete an emphasis in Social Studies through the College of Education and Technology.
The Bachelor of Arts in History requires a foreign language proficiency, while the Bachelor of Science in History does not. If you are working on your BA in History, depending on your choice in foreign language, you may need to take your language courses in person.
Learning Format for History Coursework
Though our Bachelor of Science or Arts in History can be completed online, you have the option to take all classes online or a combination of online and in-person. In any case, you’ll be completing assignments, readings, papers, tests and projects throughout the semester.
This degree includes three different course formats:
- Course sections where recorded and live lectures via Mediasite connect you with professors and other students on your own time are labeled “AW.”
- Courses where participation with the professor, other online students and students attending the in-person class on campus is required in real-time are labeled, “SW.”
- Courses that are completely online and offered through Canvas, with no recorded lecture or in-person students are labeled “WW.”
Advising for History Majors
When you join our program we want to make sure you have all the resources and advice you need to successfully complete your degree at ENMU. To do this, we offer advising via phone or email for online students, and in-person appointments if you are on campus. We look forward to working with you!
BS in History Resources and Academic Help
We want to make sure you get the support you need. We offer flexible tutoring services, including the ENMU Writing Center which is available to help you improve your writing and help you clearly communicate for written, school-related projects and assignments.
We also have online databases, journal article, and eBooks accessible through the Golden Student Success Center (GSSC). ENMU librarians are available virtually, via phone and email to provide assistance, so you'll always have the help you need to take advantage of library resources.
If you have questions or concerns about your homework assignments, projects or grades, you always have the option to email or call your professors, or visit with them during their posted office hours.

Career Opportunities in History
Our history students often compete successfully for internship opportunities in governmental and non-governmental agencies, study abroad for one or more semesters and actively seek mentorship in their future fields. ENMU history majors have achieved considerable success in graduate study, law, business, government service, education and a wide variety of fields in business.
Because of our program’s focus on developing critical and analytical thinking and strong communication skills, when you complete your degree, you are better equipped to enter the workforce, from business to public service, and you’re prepared for advanced study in graduate school, law school or other pre-professional programs.
If you are interested in teaching, you should consider ENMU’s social studies licensure programs for elementary or secondary education (availability of those programs may not be completely available online).
