Scott Wesselink graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a bachelor's degree in biology in December 2017 and recently started as an admissions recruiter for the Office of Enrollment Services.

"I really loved my time at ENMU and did not want it to end at graduation," said Scott, who was a member of Eastern's track and field team for four years. "I wanted to gain experience in the recruitment of students because I would like to coach track and field someday. I thought this position would be a valuable experience for that career option."

Scott's job duties include recruiting high school students throughout New Mexico and Texas, sharing information about all of the programs and opportunities that ENMU offers and assisting them with the admissions process.

He enjoys talking with Future Greyhounds about his experience at Eastern, including being in a three-time Lone Star Conference Academic All-Conference athlete, being the first athlete at ENMU to compete in the heptathlon and meeting and competing with some Olympians (2008 Gold medalist in the decathlon Bryan Clay and Gold medalist and world record holder Aries Merritt).

He likes working with a "great team of passionate individuals" in Enrollment Services. His goals for the position are to bring in the next generation of Greyhounds, gain experience in a professional office setting, hone his communication skills and possibly pursue a master's degree.

The former Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member's favorite things about ENMU are the people and the opportunities. "Everyone at ENMU, the faculty, staff and students, do an amazing job of building a welcoming and caring atmosphere that makes ENMU feel like home," he explained, adding that he appreciates "all the opportunities that my education at ENMU has given and will continue to give me."

Scott pursued a biology degree at Eastern because he enjoyed being outside in nature and was "always interested in understanding how the Earth works." As a student, he worked in the Alley as an office assistant, biology and math tutor and college algebra supplemental instructor. He was on the Dean's List for six semesters.

The Greyhound Grad was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has three sisters, two brothers-in-law, a nephew (12 months) and niece (15 months). His mother is a nurse and his father is a pastor, author, international speaker and yak rancher.

Scott was homeschooled for most of high school, but he participated in cross country, swimming and track at West Mesa High School. His hobbies include camping, hiking, woodworking, alternative construction (using Earthbags made out of dirt, clay or sand to create structures), cooking and any sport or exercise-related activity. He also enjoys helping his dad raise yaks and other animals.

The ENMU recruiter's role models are his family members, especially his parents. "They taught me the value of working hard and instilled great morals and a desire to learn," he said.

Scott's favorite places he has traveled are Ireland, India, the Oregon Coast, Palo Duro Canyon and "anywhere in the mountains of New Mexico."
