When Ms. Bertolas attended New Mexico State University she never wanted to join or even think about being in a sorority. She transferred to Eastern New Mexico University and her mind changed after a group of girls tabling for rush week caught her attention. Unfortunately at the time, Ms. Bertolas had a lot on her plate and it was not until the following year she pledged Zeta Tau Alpha.
Ms. Bertolas explained, "I decided to pledge Zeta because every sister was so friendly. I did not feel like an outcast. ZTA's philanthropy is breast cancer education and awareness. I knew I wanted to help make a difference."
She enjoys being a part of a sorority because she has 40 girls who have her back and have helped her to become a stronger woman--not to mention the perks of having an excuse to dress up and be glamorous.
ZTA has helped her to meet new people, get out of her comfort zone and take charge in her current leadership position. Ms. Bertolas is the Panhellenic Vice President of Scholarship.

"Panhellenic consists of 26 women's fraternities and sororities including Zeta and Chi Omega. The national Panhellenic conference provides support, guidance and services as the national voice of sorority affairs. I was offered the opportunity by the Zeta president to be a part of it and said ‘yes'," said Ms. Bertolas.
She enjoys her position as Vice President of Scholarship because she is able to plan banquets to show off her Panhellenic sister's achievements. Planning these events has given her the opportunity to develop her planning skills, to be creative and to not procrastinate.
Currently, she is in preparation for her Scholarship Tea Party event. However, this semester it will not be a tea party but more of a get together to honor the girls that have outstanding GPAs and achievements.
This semester was also Panhellenic's first time installing sisters into their honorary women's society of Rho Lambda. The event will take place on April 14.
Ms. Bertolas' advice for any girl thinking of getting involved with Greek life is to go through formal rush.
"It happens every fall and it allows you to meet every sister, see what they stand for and check out each of their houses. It will give you a good feel for Greek life, plus there's food," says the biology major.
