Eastern New Mexico University Tops 6,000 in Student Enrollments for First Time Since 2018

Portales, NM – September 9, 2025 – Eastern New Mexico University released enrollment data on Friday, Sept. 5; the results showed continued enrollment growth with the University exceeding 6,000 students for the first time since 2018, and only the fourth time in school history, with a total enrollment of 6,002 students for the fall 2025 semester.

This growth continues an upward trend at ENMU, with enrollment increasing by 265 students from fall 2024 and by 1,011 students (a 20.3 percent increase) since fall 2021. The ENMU Graduate School also set new records, with total enrollment growing by 8.5 percent to a record high of 1,614 graduate students. The university also saw a 4.7 percent increase in transfer students and a 10.8 percent rise in continuing student enrollments.

Much of the growth for fall 2025 was in full-time enrollment for both undergraduate and graduate students, leading to a 4.2 percent increase in student credit hours, adding over 2,400 more student credit hours compared to fall 2024.

"It is great to see another growth milestone. This is the result of a tremendous effort to recruit and enroll students, as well as remaining innovative to meet today's students where they are," said James Johnston, ENMU chancellor. "We continue to deliver on our mission of student success, and the word is spreading."

ENMU's student population represents New Mexico's 33 counties, 53 U.S. states and territories, and 32 countries worldwide.

As more students chose to attend in-person classes, Eastern New Mexico University welcomed them with residence halls and on-campus apartments that were at or near full capacity on the first day of the semester.

"The positive student experiences in and out of the classroom resonate through our current Greyhound community and with our alumni. I believe this has a direct impact on our enrollment growth and retention, as seen this fall," said Christy Johanson, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management. "Helping students find a sense of belonging is critical for student success, whether in-person or online. I believe we are succeeding in this goal, and this translates into a dynamic and unique student experience, one Greyhound at a time."

This marks the fourth consecutive year of overall enrollment growth for the University. For more information on ENMU, visit enmu.edu.
