What Can a Spanish Degree do for You?

The single most desirable quality by employers in nearly all professions is the ability to write and speak well. Also, those who speak a foreign language, such as Spanish, tend to earn 10–15% more than those who don’t.

Critical thinking skills, cross-cultural understanding, and the ability to empathize with others –all of which are hallmarks of an ENMU Spanish major’s education – can help you excel in any career path. Spanish majors don’t just teach. They’re in demand in government positions, the health professions, translation, business, and diplomacy, among others.

Even more exciting, you can complete this degree 100% online!

Spanish Program Details

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish will provide you with bilingual abilities, while encouraging a greater understanding of other cultures and languages. As our world grows more connected through economics and trade, Spanish is important not only to professionals working in the Southwest, but for any job where you may come into contact with a Spanish-language speaker.

We offer a special sequence of language courses that address your needs if you are a native or heritage speaker or if you've had previous contact with Spanish at home or elsewhere.

Although the time frame for degree completion varies with the individual student, the Spanish major is structured as a four-year degree program. You can complete the degree in three ways: entirely on-campus, online (through web-based or lecture-capture based courses) or through a combination of both.

Learning Format for Online Spanish Courses

The Spanish program at ENMU is designed to promote active engagement through in-person or synchronous online instruction (via Zoom or Microsoft Teams). Students are expected to be available during scheduled class times to fully benefit from real-time interaction with faculty and peers. While professors understand that extenuating circumstances may arise and may grant exceptions when appropriate, regular participation is essential to the learning experience.

Throughout the semester, students complete a variety of readings, discussions, projects, and assessments that support language development and cultural understanding. Class discussions take place in real time, either on campus or through synchronous online sessions, fostering meaningful communication in Spanish.

All Spanish courses at ENMU are technology-enhanced. Introductory and intermediate language courses integrate instructional software and online platforms that support a communicative approach to language learning, helping students develop practical Spanish skills through active use of the language.

Hands on Experience and Special Opportunities

The Spanish program offers high-impact experiential learning opportunities. Students may participate in an Intensive Summer Immersion Institute on campus, as well as a month-long total immersion summer program that allows you to practice Spanish in a native-speaking environment while exploring new regions and cultures.

ENMU also maintains international agreements with accredited institutions in Latin America and Spain, enabling students to complete study abroad semesters and internships that enhance linguistic proficiency, cultural competence, and career readiness. At ENMU, studying Spanish means more than learning a language—it means gaining access to a supportive community, global experiences, and opportunities that prepare you for success in an interconnected world.

Advising for Spanish

At ENMU, your success in languages is our priority. Students in the Spanish program have access to a wide range of academic and enrichment resources designed to support learning both inside and outside the classroom. The Language Lab, located in the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building, offers free tutoring sessions in Spanish and other languages, including French, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Italian. Tutoring is available in person (JWLA 100) and online via Microsoft Teams, making it easy to fit support into your schedule. The Language Lab also provides access to computers, language-learning software, and digital resources for in-lab use. In addition, the Lab regularly hosts cultural events, conversation hours, and communicative workshops, giving students valuable opportunities to practice languages while connecting with peers and faculty in a welcoming, collaborative environment.

We also have online databases, journal article, and eBooks accessible through the Golden Library. ENMU librarians are available virtually, via phone and email to provide assistance, so you'll always have the help you need to take advantage of library resources, even if you're sitting in front of your computer at home.

Service and Mutual Interest Organizations

Our Hispanic student organization on Campus is the ENMU Spanish Club. The ENMU Spanish Club promotes the Spanish language and the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world by creating inclusive spaces for conversation, cultural exchange, community engagement, and academic enrichment. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, ENMU’s Spanish Club supports bilingualism, intercultural competence, and student leadership while celebrating Hispanic and Latinx identities. The ENMU Spanish Club members support learners of all levels while honoring the lived experiences and cultural heritage of ENMU’s Hispanic-serving community.

The Spanish Club helps plan and facilitate Festival Románico, an annual cultural celebration on the ENMU Portales campus that brings together high school students, families, educators, and the ENMU community to honor and celebrate Hispanic culture, creativity, and tradition.

Each year, high schools from across the region are invited to ENMU to showcase student work in Spanish and inspired by Hispanic cultures, including visual art, theater performances, music, dance, crafts, poetry, essays, and other creative talents. The festival provides a welcoming space where students can share their voices, stories, and cultural heritage while gaining confidence in their academic and artistic abilities.
