The Backbone of ENMU

Physical Plant
The Physical Plant is the backbone of Eastern New Mexico University. Physical Plant employees work on campus to fix buildings and machines, and work tirelessly to keep the premises clean. During the early mornings and overnight shifts, the Physical Plant strives to find the best ways to work together and finish their projects efficiently. Each employee believes that the collective ROO of the physical plant is to "not only help others around campus but to help each other as well."
Ray Nations
“My ROO is to work together at a good enough pace, to get tasks done efficiently.”

Ray Nations is the manager of operations at Eastern New Mexico University's Physical Plant and has been working on campus since 2019. Ray is originally from Tucumcari, New Mexico, and moved to Portales when he was in grade school. He is married to Pallas Nations (BS88, MEd10), and they have two daughters, Kylie and Morgan (BBA17, MBA20). "Most of my job is to make sure that everyone is assured that we take their issues seriously, and that things get changed and fixed," he said. In Nations's opinion, the way employees strive to work at the Physical Plant is to work together with each other and to take in everyone's opinions. He believes this helps each individual to share their ideas and see which one works best. Nations' ROO is to work at a consistent pace to get tasks done efficiently. Currently, his projects entail installing boilers, updating boiler systems, and installing new air coolers in the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building. "No one sees all the stuff that happens in the background, that we make sure happens," he said. Ray continues to accomplish his mission to complete his workload in a timely manner and continues to work with his quiet smile while doing so.
Roberta Romero
“My ROO is to keep the safety and health of the students by keeping areas disinfected, communicating with others, and directing students to resources when needed.”

Roberta Romero is a custodian at ENMU and started working for the Physical Plant in 2018. Romero was born and raised in Portales, New Mexico, and was led to Eastern because she was able to take classes as she worked. Romero is a single mother of three beautiful children, and she spends time with family. She says her sister and mother are her biggest supporters. Romero feels that making Eastern a better environment starts with working on herself by creating unity, character, and peace to make it a well-rounded place. "Overall, I am grateful that I can get the job done," she says. Romero wants to continue helping others when needed but is planning to get involved with the Support Senate on campus, as well as trying to expand her horizons while meeting new people as she goes.
Phillip Duran

Duran is originally from Portales, New Mexico, and is married to Lisa Duran They have three children and nine grandchildren. This past December, Phillip and Lisa celebrated 35 years of marriage. "My motto I tell people, 'I want to see you the same way you came in this morning,'" he said. For him, this means that everyone should stay safe and take their time with the projects they are completing. He oversees the academic buildings, West Campus, and the dorms located on Eastern grounds. He directs his employees to work in a timely manner and to communicate well with one another. Duran's main goal is to carefully look at what he oversees, so that when parents visit their children, they can enjoy an environment that is presentable. Duran believes that the Physical Plant is a welcoming place of work because of his supervisor, John Kanmore, and the rest of his colleagues, who help each other and understand when things happen in their personal lives.

Karen Evans is a custodian for ENMU and started working for the Physical Plant in 2021. She attended Eastern New Mexico University and earned her associate's degree. She then started as a substitute teacher in 1997 and was later hired as a teacher's assistant at Brown Early Childhood Center in 2000, where she worked for 17 years. Evans is happily married to her husband, and they have two boys. Evans' main goal is to keep her three buildings clean, which include the Science Building, Roosevelt Hall, and Quay Hall. She works during the night from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. She truly enjoys working throughout the night because she gets to enjoy listening to audiobooks as she cleans without having to disturb anybody. "The night crew is a perfect crew. This is a fun place to work because we can all enjoy each other's company," she said. Evans believes she personally makes Eastern a cleaner environment and enjoys making her buildings safe and healthy for students and staff.

Every day, Bachicha makes sure to keep a smile on her face and make each student feel welcome.
