ENMU Presents New Plays March 2-5

PORTALES, NM – Feb. 23, 2023 – Eastern New Mexico University's Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking is proud to present the New Mexico New Works Festival, featuring ten new short plays from New Mexican Playwrights. The festival, to run March 2-5 at the University Theatre Center (UTC), includes works by ENMU students, alums, and professional playwrights across the state.

"The stories told are as diverse as the people of New Mexico," said Leonard Madrid, ENMU associate professor of theatre and festival coordinator. "There's a play about double-dutch for kids, a play about grief, and even a science-fiction play."

ENMU students are involved in every aspect of this production, including acting, directing, writing, and stage management.

"It is a good opportunity to learn new acting and stage tech techniques," said Jai Whitteker, a second-year theatre major. "It gives you a new perspective on how to collaborate as a theatre artist."

"It is exciting to see someone else work with your script and see how they approach it," said playwright and ENMU student Israel Stacy. "I also appreciate the ability to rewrite my script throughout the rehearsal process."

The plays will be presented each night of the festival, with a 7 p.m. curtain time on March 2-4. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Mar. 5. All performances are on the UTC's main stage. General admission is $10. Senior citizens and active duty military tickets are $7. Tickets can be purchased in advance at enmu.edu/theatrelive.

Due to some content and language, this show will not be appropriate for younger or more sensitive audiences. For more information, contact Madrid at [email protected] or call 575-562-2092.
