Student Transfers to ENMU for Fresh Start

Planning to study Library Sciences in grad school, she is pursuing a degree in English with Secondary licensure at ENMU. "I really love how everyone is open to helping you here," said Headley.

She really enjoys the English program and teachers that she's met at ENMU so far. "I want to be a teacher because I love working with young minds, and because of the great teachers I had in high school," said Headley.

Some of her favorite classes at ENMU are English 211 and Bryan Hann's Dance 101 class. "I get to know all the [ENMU] teachers well, and they remember me," said Headley.

Originally from Portales, Headley adores the family feeling that the area and University has to offer.

"You're not just another face in the crowd," said Headley. The teachers, students and faculty at ENMU are all focused on making students' succeed—students are less likely to fall through the cracks than at a larger university.

The day Headley moved to Portales, word was spread that she needed a job. Quickly, she found a job on campus. Surprised and astounded by helpfulness, Headley says "Everyone just wants you to do good!"

Looking to transfer between here and another university, she was looking for a new place that was small yet personal. She wanted a town where everyone knows everyone, and a place where the people care.

She says that even the people working at the Zime Café in JWLA care. Headley laughs, "This may be a sign that I go a little too often… but the lady [in JWLA] remembers my order—a mango peach smoothie."

Saying yes to ENMU, she is in a warm, friendly community with friends and family near. The University offers a great support system among teachers, advisors and groups.

Involved in the college Bible study Spectrum, she says ENMU has great options for students who can connect and get involved in a community they belong to.

"Each step has already been laid out for me by my advisor," Headley said.

She is very thankful for the open, kind and accepting community that Portales embodies.
