Critical thinking, research tools, time management and project organization are skills you will learn while pursing a Master of Arts degree in English. We work to help all our online students stay engaged with course material and are experienced in accommodating the unique schedules associated with active duty military personnel. Our department's small size lends itself to intimate classes, with advisors and committee chairs working one-one-one with students. Our faculty has a diverse range of research interests including:

  • Early American literature
  • Animal studies
  • Victorian literature
  • Creative writing
  • Literary theory

To complete this program, you need to pass comprehensive exams, and complete and defend a thesis. Graduate students in English study literary texts, film and historical records, as well as critical and cultural theory. The graduate program involves extensive reading of prose, poetry, visual media, and drama, as well as writing and research activities. In addition to a traditional track of literary study, you may study creative writing and prepare a creative thesis as your final project or choose our "inclusion and resistance" focus, a study of the social and artistic areas used by minority groups to shape history.

Learning Format For English Graduate Degree Coursework

Our graduate degree in English can be completed 100% online, with the option to take some courses in person. You'll complete assignments, group and individual projects, group and individual presentations, readings and tests throughout the semester. Lectures are delivered and recorded via Mediasite and programs like Adobe Collaborate and Skype allow you to be engaged in course work. Professors prefer that you watch lectures in real time so you can gain the benefit of participation with your instructor and peers. But, we also have experience working with students who are unable to watch in real time and may make exceptions based on individual circumstances. To fulfill your graduation requirements for this program, you must pass comprehensive exams and successfully defend a thesis. For distance education students living outside of Portales, we use media equipped classrooms to let you defend your thesis from home and allow the taking of comprehensive exams at a testing center near you.
