Greyhound Guide Chapter 7

Words of Wisdom

The next step after choosing Eastern as your college home will be acclimating to your new environment, and we can help you understand what to expect.

Chapter 7: Words of Wisdom

1. SHOW UP.

Attendance is an important part of academic success. Missing only a few classes can put students behind and professors will notice if you are absent.

2. COMMUNICATE.

Find ways to interact with your professors. Ask questions during class, go to their office hours or ask for advice on potential career options. Professors are often the first professional references students will have and you want them to remember you once class is over.

3. INTERACT.

Come to class prepared. Sit near the front and ask an insightful question or two. When e-mailing your professors, be respectful and make sure to address them by their appropriate title (Dr., Mr., Ms., etc.). During class, turn off your cell phone and put it away. Professors can tell if you are using it.

4. EXPLORE.

Discover what ENMU’s campus has to offer! Clubs, events, Greek life, religious groups and study abroad opportunities are just some of the ways you can get involved. Find different student activities that you are interested in during orientation. Research shows that students who are affiliated with a campus group or who have a part-time job are less likely to drop out and more likely to finish their degree programs on time. It also enriches your college experience!

5. BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS.

Try to experience new things while in college. Take a cultural or language course and maybe even spend a semester abroad. Both become much more expensive once you leave college and time constraints become more of an issue once you have a full-time job.

6. BE HEALTH CONSCIOUS.

Make healthy choices! Eat balanced meals in the cafeteria, exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep. Using the campus gym and athletic facilities or joining an intermural sports team are great ways to stay active. Sickness can put you behind in your classes and your social life so make your health a priority!

7. KNOW YOUR RESOURCES.

A wide variety of services are offered on campus including tutoring, health services, veterans services, mental health counseling, career advice and disability support services. Even if you do not need these services now you may need them in the future so it is important to know what resources are available to you.

8. SOCIALIZE.

Try to meet new people everywhere you go. Greet your neighbor across the hall in your dorm, join as many clubs as you can, talk to you classmates or setup a study group. Connecting with other students on campus is easy as long as you try.

9. BE READY TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS.

The transition from high school to college comes with a lot of changes. Be ready for a few culture shocks as you adjust to your new life as a college student.

10. HAVE FUN! THE YEARS WILL FLY BY.
